Police were dispatched to the house around 4:45 PM after receiving a report of someone firing a gun 30 to 40 times from inside the house, according to a statement from the Arlington County Police Department.

Police tried to contact the suspect by phone and loudspeakers, but he did not respond and remained hidden inside the house, according to the police.

Officers approached the house just before 8:25 PM. The suspect then fired several times from inside the house, said Arlington County police spokesperson Ashley Savage, after which the explosion occurred.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was inside the house at the time of the explosion, according to local police. Police were not aware of anyone else inside the house, but said they do not rule out the possibility of other people being in the residence.

The Arlington Police Department reported only minor injuries to officers who did not require hospitalization as a result of the explosion.

The Arlington County Fire Department said the fire was under control by around 10:30 PM, but teams were still dealing with small outbreaks of fire.

The ATF and FBI are assisting in the investigation.
